Ian Bates

Professor Bates is Director of the AECM Microtechnology Systems Centre
at RMIT University Melbourne, Australia. The Centre undertakes a wide
range of commercial research in MEMS covering biomedical, process
control and energy systems, as well as solar energy research. A
particular aim of the work in the Centre is the delivery of outcomes for
the good of mankind.

Prior to establishing the Centre in 2002, Professor Bates was Associate
Dean overseeing the research and development in the Faculty of
Engineering at RMIT. He has consulted widely for industry both within
Australia and in South East Asia.

Professor Bates joined RMIT in 1989 from the State Electricity
Commission Victoria, Australia where he held the position of General
Manager Transmission -- responsible for the planning, design and
operation of the interconnected power system (spanning some 2000 km) for
the state of Victoria. In 1984, he was awarded a Centennial Medal by the
USA IEEE for extraordinary achievement in the field of design and
control of power systems.
